Sectigo® S/MIME Organization Validated Information

Sectigo® S/MIME Organization Validated is an E-Mail Certificate that encrypts your e-mail, adds a digital signature, and carries the verified name of your organization inside the E-Mail Certificate itself.

Before issuance, Sectigo® acts as the Certificate Authority (CA) and confirms two things : that the organization exists as a registered legal entity, and that the e-mail address being secured is controlled by that organization.

Because company records are checked, issuance takes longer than a mailbox check alone. In return, a recipient inspecting a signed message can see a verified organization name rather than an address on its own.

The sections below explain what is verified, what the organization name adds, and how to put the E-Mail Certificate in place.

Organization Validation Explained

Organization Validation (OV) confirms that a real, registered organization stands behind the e-mail address. The Certificate Authority (CA) checks the legal existence of the organization, its registered address, and its right to use the address being secured.

These checks draw on official business records rather than a single confirmation message, so the process usually takes a few business days rather than minutes. Understand The Validation Procedure 🔗

The verified organization name is then recorded inside the issued E-Mail Certificate, where any recipient can inspect it. Learn About Organization Validation 🔗

The Value of a Verified Organization Name

At mailbox validation, the address alone is the identity. A recipient can confirm the message came from that address, but not who stands behind it.

Organization Validation records the verified company name, so a recipient inspecting the signature sees the organization as well as the address. That matters most where the recipient has no prior relationship with the sender.

Individual names are not included at this validation level, which makes it well suited to organizational and role based addresses such as accounts, billing, or support mailboxes.

Sectigo® as the Certificate Authority

Sectigo® is a long-established, widely trusted commercial Certificate Authority (CA). Its roots are present in the trust stores used by common e-mail clients and operating systems, so a signed message is recognized without the recipient configuring anything.

Trustico® provides the E-Mail Certificate, while Sectigo® carries out the organization checks and issues it. Learn About the Sectigo® Certificate Authority 🔗

Encryption and Digital Signatures

A digital signature proves a message came from the sender it claims to come from, and reveals whether the content was altered in transit. Encryption keeps the message readable only by the intended recipient.

The E-Mail Certificate uses a 2048-bit RSA key with SHA-256 hashing. Most e-mail clients exchange public keys automatically once they receive a signed message, which is what allows a correspondent to begin sending you encrypted mail.

Preparing for Validation

Validation moves faster when the details on the order match the official record exactly. Use the full registered company name, the registered address, and a telephone number that can be verified against a public listing.

The e-mail address being secured must also be one the organization controls and can receive mail at. Review E-Mail Address Handling 🔗

E-Mail Certificate Validity and Reissues

Your order is a license for the term you select. Because industry rules cap an individual E-Mail Certificate at 825 days, a longer license is kept current by reissuing the E-Mail Certificate during the term rather than issuing one for the whole period.

Reissues are free and unlimited across the license, for instance after you change your key or move to a new device. Manage your reissues in the Trustico® Tracking System 🔗

Key Generation and the Certificate Signing Request

The E-Mail Certificate is bound to a key pair that you generate. The Certificate Signing Request (CSR) carries your public key to the Certificate Authority (CA), while the Private Key remains with you and is never sent to Trustico®

Losing the Private Key also loses the ability to read any mail already encrypted to it, so keep a backup when you export it. Learn About the Certificate Signing Request 🔗

E-Mail Client Compatibility

The E-Mail Certificate works with the clients most organizations already run, including Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird, on desktop and on mobile devices.

Setup differs by client, because each one stores keys in its own way. Follow the guide for S/MIME in Office 365 🔗

Suitable Uses

Organization Validation fits businesses, government bodies, and regulated organizations that send confidential material by e-mail and need recipients to see who stands behind the message.

It is a direct answer to impersonation, since a forged message cannot carry a verified organization name. Read About the Business E-Mail Compromise Attack 🔗

Where e-mail is handled at scale across a mail server rather than a single client, encryption in transit is a separate concern. Read About E-Mail Server Security 🔗

Most Popular Questions

Frequently asked questions covering Sectigo® S/MIME Organization Validated, an E-Mail Certificate that encrypts and signs e-mail and carries a verified organization name, including what is checked during validation, how long it takes, and how to prepare.

Coverage of Sectigo® S/MIME Organization Validated

Sectigo® S/MIME Organization Validated encrypts your e-mail, adds a digital signature, and records the verified name of your organization inside the E-Mail Certificate. A recipient inspecting a signed message can see the organization behind it, rather than the e-mail address on its own.

Checks Performed During Organization Validation

The Certificate Authority (CA) confirms that the organization exists as a registered legal entity, verifies its registered address, and confirms its right to use the e-mail address being secured. These checks draw on official business records rather than a single confirmation message.

Time Required for Organization Validation

Because company records are examined, issuance takes longer than a mailbox check alone, usually a few business days rather than minutes. Validation moves faster when the details on the order match the official record exactly, including the full registered company name and address.

Organization Validation Compared with Mailbox Validation

Mailbox validation confirms only that you control the e-mail address, so the address alone is the identity a recipient sees. Organization Validation adds verified company details to the E-Mail Certificate. That matters most where the recipient has no prior relationship with the sender.

Suitability for Role Based Addresses

Individual names are not included at this validation level, which makes it well suited to organizational and role based addresses such as accounts, billing, or support mailboxes. The verified organization name identifies the sender in place of a personal name.

E-Mail Certificate Validity and Reissues

An individual E-Mail Certificate is capped at a maximum validity of 825 days under industry rules. A longer license is kept current by reissuing the E-Mail Certificate during the term rather than issuing one for the whole period. Reissues are free and unlimited across the license.
